In Japan, its very common nowadays(usually found on magazines, poster, commercials), previously these are intended for tagging items from manufacturing line just like what we commonly use as bar code. But the usual bar code that usually appears behind the pack of potato chips are called single dimension bar code, the QR code are multi dimension and can store more complex information like business card, web address,discount coupons and etc. So how we decode them? In Japan, they use their cell phone to capture the image and their phone can decode image directly.
